AWS provides templates for virtual machines. The template is preconfigured for the type of operating system and it can be used when launching the instance. The template includes the following:

• The root volume that must be used by the operating system.
• The AMI permissions. These permissions determine who can use this template.

Users can create an AMI template from an existing EC2 instance. This allows users to create customized AMIs.
