How it works...

The Sass preprocessor can parse closures within a selector to identify properties from other selectors. It uses this to track the hierarchy of a selector, and, when compiled, it builds a fully qualified vanilla CSS equivalent of it. The & parent selector is a special selector that always references the current selector scope and is also complied to its fully qualified equivalent selector in the output CSS.
