using unusual containers

One of the awesome things about succulents is that, due to their shallow root system and drought tolerance, they can be planted in unusual containers. You can plant succulents in just about anything you can think of: a scrap of wood, a birdhouse, even an old pan or shoe!

drainage

As with any container selection, you need to make sure your unusual container has a drainage hole. If you plan on your arrangement being temporary, you can probably get away without a drainage hole. Otherwise, you risk losing your plants and possibly ruining your container. Metal containers can rust and rot out, and wood planters can also rot out if the water doesn’t drain. You’re also more likely to attract bugs and diseases. See “How to Adapt a Non-Draining Container” for tips on adding drainage to your containers if they don’t already have a hole.

soil or no soil?

Succulents survive surprisingly well with little or no soil. If you’re planting in something like driftwood, a little sphagnum moss will work as a replacement for soil. Sometimes your planting may be so tight that there isn’t room for anything other than succulents.

If possible, it’s best to use soil, but your succulents will be just fine without it. Without soil, you’ll want to make sure the roots stay out of direct sunlight. Water the roots directly if possible or make sure the water can run down onto the roots. A soilless arrangement can last for several years if the roots are protected. It will also benefit from semi-annual fertilizing as soil generally provides some nutrients for the succulents.

lifespan

It’s surprising how long succulents can grow in something other than a pot. While they may not get much bigger or produce very many new plants, succulents can last for a few years in most containers. With proper care and maintenance, your succulents will stay alive and keep looking great.

have fun

Don’t be afraid to try new things and really experiment with your containers. Succulents are pretty forgiving and will grow almost anywhere. Take a look around the house and see what you can repurpose as a succulent planter!
