strawberry pot
If you’re looking for something a little different than the typical ceramic pot, try a strawberry pot! These pots come in a variety of sizes and colors and have “pockets” poking out of the sides. Not only do you have plants at the top, but along the sides of the planter as well. Succulents work well in these pockets because they don’t need a lot of space for roots. This planter is a simple way to add interest to your succulent garden.
materials
• Planter
• Succulents (3 to 5 varieties)
• Saw or pipe cutter (not pictured)
• Drill with 1/16-inch (1.5mm) drill bit
• PVC pipe (1-inch; 2.5cm diameter)
• Wire mesh
• Duct tape
• Soil
Using a saw or pipe cutter, cut a piece of PVC pipe just taller than your strawberry pot.
Drill 1/16-inch (1.5mm) holes all along the pipe about 1 inch (2.5cm) apart. Leave 1 to 2 inches (2.5–5cm) at the top of the pipe without holes.
Place duct tape over the top end of the pipe. This will prevent soil from getting in as you fill the planter.
Place wire mesh over the holes in the bottom of the strawberry planter to prevent soil from coming out.
Place the PVC pipe in the center of the pot.
Fill the bottom of the planter with soil until it reaches the lowest pocket in the strawberry planter.
Add your succulents to the lower pocket, starting with any hanging succulents.
Once you like the arrangement, fill the inside of the pot with soil until it reaches the bottom of the next pocket, then add succulents to the pocket.
Continue adding soil and succulents until all the pockets are filled. Make sure to keep the PVC pipe centered.
When you reach the top of the planter, add larger succulents to the top around the PVC pipe.
Arrange the succulents so the top of the pipe is concealed, but leave it accessible so that you can water the planter through the pipe.
Add a top dressing to the top of the pot and to the pockets if desired. Remove duct tape from the top of the PVC pipe.
To water the planter, pour water into the pipe. This helps distribute the water evenly throughout the planter.
Be sure to keep the planter in an area that gets plenty of light, and rotate it from time to time so that all the succulents get enough light.
