Bouquet
If you’re looking for a really incredible succulent project, this is it: the succulent bouquet. Working with succulents in bouquets is a great way to add variety and texture. Plus, the bride or bridesmaids will have a keepsake at the end of the day. They can plant the succulents and have something to remember the wedding by for years to come. Creating a bouquet with only succulents can be a bit tricky, but it’s well worth it. Nothing can beat a gorgeous arrangement of succulents on a special day.
Materials
• Succulent cuttings (20 to 30 in 5 to 7 varieties)
• Floral wire
• Wire cutters
• Floral tape
• Scissors
• Wooden skewers (for heavy succulents)
• Ribbon (1- to 2-inches [2.5–5cm] wide)
• Decorative pins
Remove any unwanted lower leaves from your succulents.
Cut a piece of wire about 2 feet (.6m) long. Insert the wire through the stem of a succulent cutting.
Pull the wire until there is an even amount on each side, then bend the wire downward.
Wrap the wire, beginning at the succulent stem, with floral tape.
Be sure to stretch the tape slightly as you go. This causes the tape to become tacky and stick to itself.
Once the wire is covered with tape, cut the tape and finish wrapping the end.
Repeat this process with each succulent you are using.
For larger succulents, you can use a wood skewer and wire to keep the succulent more stable.
Start arranging the bouquet. Combine 2 to 3 succulents and wrap their wire stems together with floral tape.
Look for shapes that fit together when combining the different pieces. Succulents are not as flexible as flowers, so it’s important to make sure they fit together well.
Tape the stems together as you go to keep them in place. This makes it easier to add other stems without losing the shape you’ve created.
The bases don’t all need to align at the bottom. Vary the heights of the succulents to create visual interest.
Once you have all the flowers combined, secure them again with floral tape so the whole bouquet is one piece.
Trim the ends so they are all the same length.
Use a long ribbon to cover the wire stems. Start and the bottom and work upward. Overlap the edges to ensure the stems are not visible.
Tie a bow to secure the ribbon or use decorative pins.
