hanging planter
A hanging planter is a simple but unique way to display succulents. While a potted arrangement is usually viewed from above, a hanging arrangement is viewed from below or at eye level. Focus on height and depth when designing a hanging arrangement. Trailing succulents will really make this planter exciting and beautiful. You’ll also want taller succulents that will show above the rim of the planter when it’s hanging. Have fun combining a variety of plants to create a stunning arrangement!
materials
• Hanging planter
• Coconut liner
• Succulents (3 to 5 varieties)
• Medium decorative rocks (optional)
• Soil
• Top dressing
If your coconut liner isn’t already the perfect size for your planter, trim it to size and place it in the basket.
Fill the basket about three-quarters full with soil.
Place the trailing succulents first. Insert the end of the cutting under the soil to hold the plant in place.
Use a variety of trailing succulents for extra interest and to add contrast to the arrangement.
You can use your other succulents to keep the trailing succulents in place by setting them on top of the roots or the end of the cutting.
If the other succulents aren’t strong enough to hold the hanging succulents in place, place a rock over the roots to secure the plants.
Add your tallest succulents to the arrangement near the center.
Fill the planter the rest of the way with soil so all the roots are covered.
Finish adding succulents to fill in the planter.
Once you like the arrangement, add your top dressing.
Your planter can be hung once you’ve finished the arrangement. Be sure it is tightly secured so it doesn’t fall.
If your arrangement will be kept inside, take it down to water. Water thoroughly when the soil is dry.
