succulent-topped pumpkin
Give your autumn décor an unexpected twist with this festive succulent-topped pumpkin. It’s a unique—and less messy’alternative to the traditional carved pumpkin. Try pairing your succulents with pumpkins of different shapes, sizes, and colors. A smaller pumpkin will make a colorful centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table, while a larger pumpkin will bring seasonal color and interest to your front porch.
materials
• Pumpkin
• Succulent cuttings (3 to 5 smaller varieties)
• Sphagnum moss
• Spray adhesive
• Glue gun
• Sharp knife
• Fall accents
Cut off the stem of the pumpkin so it is almost flush with the top.
Spray adhesive generously on the top of the pumpkin.
Attach dry sphagnum moss where you sprayed the adhesive. Use more adhesive if necessary to get the moss as you’d like it.
Once the moss is just right, begin attaching succulents.
Start from the center and work your way out.
Use hot glue to hold the succulents in place.
The hot glue will not adhere to the pumpkin, so make sure your succulent is on the moss.
Place taller succulents in the center and use shorter succulents around them.
Add other seasonal objects such as acorns or pinecones as desired.
Use hanging succulents along the outer edge of the pumpkin top for extra visual interest.
Keep the succulent-topped pumpkin looking great by misting it with water every few days, soaking the moss as much as possible.
Be sure to provide several hours of morning sun to the pumpkin to help the succulents maintain their shape and color.
reuse your succulents
The pumpkin can last for several weeks, until the pumpkin itself begins to get soggy. You can then remove the succulents and use them in your garden or for another project.
