Phone.com's UP.Simulator

Phone.com does not create phones. Rather, it is the company that creates one of the most popular and advanced microbrowsers—the browser that is installed on phones from many vendors including Samsung, Qualcomm, Alcatel, Ericsson, Motorola, Mitsubishi, Nokia, and Siemens.

As a pioneer of WAP (plus WML and, before that, HDML) development, Phone.com has led the way in WAP-development tools. Phone.com's freely available UP.SDK is now in its fourth version and includes a sophisticated simulator, as well as extensive documentation and sample development code for many popular languages.

The browser itself, seen in Figure C.11, supports multiple device configurations allowing the emulator to simulate many popular devices (configurations can be downloaded from Phone.com). The emulator itself includes much of the same code that actually goes into the devices, which makes the emulation far more realistic and accurate.

The emulator features a Phone Information screen (seen in Figure C.12) which provides real-time access to device information. The Info menu in the emulator can also be used to request specific information which is displayed in the Phone Information window.

The UP.SDK does not include an editing environment, but extensive documentation and language help (in HTML and PDF) is included.

Note

The UP.SDK can be downloaded from developer.phone.com Registration is required.
