Summary

I've covered a lot of ground in this chapter. I showed you the basics of handling variables in WML decks—how to name them then substitute and manipulate their contents. I showed you how to gather free-form user data with the input element. I then showed you how to restrict the values of user input with the select element, which creates rigid lists of options. Next, I covered some of the less-frequently implemented input artifacts of the language. Finally, I showed you how to send data back to your application with URLs and post data.

This chapter wraps up the basic pieces you need to create WAP applications. You've learned about navigating between cards, how to manage output to the screen with both text and images, and finally, how to gather input from the user. The next section of the book will teach you some of the more advanced techniques of WAP development, such as integrating with email systems, using WMLScript, timers, and notifications. You'll also cover security, integrating your HTML and WML Web sites, and see some of the best practices of developers in this field.
