940 What good habits should a comic illustrator
have? You should have the habit of drawing what
you think. I always draw the new places and
people I meet in my daily life.
936 What differentiates you from mangas
other illustrators? I am drawing carefully to make
expressions softer.
937 W
hat advice Would you give to a novice
illustrator trying to make a name for himself? I
would say lets show and spread your idea.
Getting many people’s agreement makes your
name famous.
938 W
hat has changed about your style of
draWing since you began? My basic style has not
changed, but I soak up trendy new styles if
necessary.
939 m
anga: is it art? There are no limits for

302 1,000 Tips by 100 Manga Artists
941 Where do the ideas for your draWings come
from? hoW do you do your research? Whenever I go
out, I always carry my digital camera with me to
take pictures of old buildings, streets, machines
(thrown away) that usually interest no one. I use
them for collage or drawing a picture.
942 W
hat does your Work desk look like? What
can We come across? I always try to keep my desk
clean, but one can see a lot of paper, CDs and files
there, so my desk looks like a very dense city like
Tokyo or a city after an earthquake.
943 d
o you alWays use the same tools or do
you change depending on the piece youre Working
on? I usually use a brush pen to represent lively
nuances well, but sometimes I use a pencil to
show emotions of characters precisely.
944 W
hat do you like about manga? What
does manga have that european or american comics
dont? It is an enjoyable experience to follow a
storyboard consisting of lines and images that
manga can offer to readers. It is also possible
for a manga artist to make manga, which is
sometimes comparable to movies, with only a
pen and paper.
945 h
oW do you make your draWings come to
life? When I draw a picture, I always make use of
my experience or emotion that I’ve had before.
That would be the only way for your works to
come alive.

950 What is the greatest acknoWledgement you could hope
to achieve for your Work? If I find my works in a village’s
bookstorewhere I stop by chancethat would be the
time I realize my work is accepted.
946 What advice Would you give to a novice
illustrator trying to make a name for himself? A lot of
people around you may say something good or
bad about your works, but it is better not to listen
to their opinion too much, because you must have
something original in your works to become a
successful illustrator.
947 W
hat has changed about your style of
draWing since you began? I used to draw fantasy
manga, in which a robot appears and something
happens, but now I am more interested in making
something ordinary with a bit of wonder. For
example, I like to draw pictures in which a man
takes a walk and sees something.
948 m
anga: is it art? I think manga is different
from art. Manga should have a good storyboard,
and that is not important in art. Otherwise, it is
nothing but a collection of images.
949 W
hat is the most important lesson you have
learned that you Would like to pass on to others? Of
course, there are good times and bad times as a
manga artist, but the most important thing is to
keep on making your works like you did in your
childhood. If you do so, I am sure you will create
a masterpiece someday.
