Hanatsu and Serizawa Naoki,
she presented her work widely
in
seinen
and
josei
manga
magazines, fashion magazines
and animated web films. Today,
she serializes her works in
the
seinen

now, she’s planning to “put
more effort” into her work as an

78 1,000 Tips by 100 Manga Artists
191 Where do the ideas for your draWings come
from? hoW do you do your research? My drawing
ideas develop when I’m talking to my friends or
boyfriend, at a music live show and looking at
other peoples pieces of work. My work is always
revolving around the people I am around. I
research by interacting with people.
192 W
ho are your favorite illustrators?
a
re you trying to folloW in their footsteps? My
favorite illustrator is a Japanese artist, Ryo
Ikuemi. Her stories are always very moving and
stay in readers’ hearts and stay with them for a
long time. I want to produce something alike,
like a charm that someone would want to hold
everyday.
193 W
hat does your Work desk look like? What
can We come across? My desk is L-shaped with a
computer and printer on it. I have my favorite
pictures and ads posted up on the wall facing me
when sit at my desk. A sheep kinetic sculpture is
dangling above the desk; my desk area looks very
busy.
194 W
hat is the first thing you do before
sitting doWn to draW? When drawing, you stay
inside and tend to get lazy, so to maintain my
aesthetic consciousness, I curl my hair, dress
nicely and prepare a nice hot cup of coffee before
I start drawing.
195 d
o you alWays use the same tools or do you
change depending on the piece youre Working on? Yes.
When I write essay mangas, I use the Multiliner
by Copic and when I write story mangas, I use
Marupen by Zebra. For color scripts, I like to use
Sketch by Copic.

200 What has changed about your style of
draWing since you began? My style of drawing in the
past was realistic but these days I try to omit lines
to make the drawings simple. Before, I always
needed to “add” more to my work but right now to
“reduce” has become an important task.
196 What are your favorite tools or draWing
programs, and Why? My favorite tool for drawing
is the mechanical pencils by Staedtler. I like it
because it can hold many pencil leads, it is thin
and narrow and easy to hold, and it weighs a little
heavier than other mechanical pencils which
create stability.
197 W
hat do you like about manga? What
does manga have that european or american comics
dont? What I like about manga is that manga
artists take on the role as a director, scriptwriter,
producer, and as director for casting, costume,
and screen image all by themselves. I’m sorry but
I don’t really know mangas outside of Japanese
ones.
198 h
oW do you make your draWings come
to life? For example, when drawing a human
character, drawing facial expressions that shows
its feelings without the use of obvious symbols
such as tears and sweat drops, help put life into
the drawings and character.
199 W
hat advice Would you give to a novice
illustrator trying to make a name for himself? To
produce and increase the number of the pieces
of work and to continuously present your work.
Draw numerous pieces which you might regret
later and make many mistakes. And, important,
listen to other peoples opinions.
