inspiration from the picture

character.
612 W
ho are your favorite illustrators? are
you trying to folloW in their footsteps? My favorite
illustrator is Kin Shiotani, and I even bought one
of his original pictures. I don’t think I can follow
in his footsteps. I’ll try to do it my way with
sunae
.
613 W

sitting doWn to draW? I clean my room.
614 d

6 17 d
o you feel the need to better yourself When
it comes to your Work? to What extent? Of course! I
try to pursue works that overwhelm people and
give life to sand. I also want to make more pieces
that show people how much fun
sunae
can be.
618 W

draWing since you began? My style of drawing
hasn’t changed very much.
619 W

625 What differentiates you from mangas other illustrators? I
think my stuff—particularly on projects like
Mo-Bot High,
my mecha
school manga—is a mix of manga influences with very British style
and sensibilities. Hopefully this makes the end result a little different.
621 Who are your favorite illustrators? are you
trying to folloW in their footsteps? Theres so many
artists I admire, but the biggest influences will
always be the ones whose work I loved as a kid:
Alan Davis, Bill Waterson, Rumiko Takahashi...
622 W
hat does your Work desk look like? What
can We come across? Cluttered, usually! I always
have big piles of reference, scripts, notes, comics,
sketches etc. all piled up around me. And toys!
For reference. And occasionally for playing with.
623 W
hat are your favorite tools or draWing
programs, and Why? I use Manga Studio for
inking—it’s the closest thing to drawing with
pens and paper, but with advantages: you
don’t have to buy new nibs all the time, and
crucially—there’s an undo button.
624 W
hat do you like about manga? What does
m
anga have that european or american comics dont?
It’s hard to generalize, but they often have an
energy and pace to their storytelling completely
unlike what I was used to in comics I read
growing up, and that I try to capture in my own
work.

626 hoW important is promotion to you? hoW do
you promote your Work? As a freelancer, promotion
is half the job. I try to do things that are fun and
cool, like when I drew an A-Z of Awesomeness
based on suggestions from Twitter
(@neillcameron) and my blog (neillcameron.
blogspot.com).
627 d
o you feel the need to better yourself When
it comes to your Work? to What extent? I’m always
trying to get better with every page I draw. It is
possible that I do not manage this every single
time.
628 W
hat has changed about your style
of draWing since you began? If anything, I’ve
developed the confidence just to be happy
drawing in my style, rather than trying to force
myself to draw in ways that I think I ought to.
629 W
hat good habits should a comic
illustrator have? Will power! Force yourself to
sit down and draw every day, even if you’re not
feeling creative, rather than just sitting watching
TV/DVDs/playing video games/checking
Facebook/Twitter...
630 W
hat is the greatest acknoWledgement you
could hope to achieve for your Work? Getting letters
and fan drawings from kids who’ve read
Mo-Bot
High
is pretty much the best feeling in the world,
and all the acknowledgement I need. Although an
enormous pile of money would be nice, too.
