975 Do you always use the same tools or Do you
change DepenDing on the piece youre working on?
I change the tools depending on the piece I’m
working on. I use to use watercolors, PC, color
pencil, mechanical pencil and acryl.
971 where Do the iDeas for your Drawings come
from? how Do you Do your research? They come
from doodling. I just draw unconsciously.
972 w

trying to follow in their footsteps? Dick Bruna.

9 74 w
hat is the first thing you Do before sitting
Down to Draw? I lift some weights. It allows me to
concentrate on drawing with no worldly thoughts
after that.

981 Do you prefer the classic guiDelines from manga
or experimenting with new channels? Most of my work is
structured by
yonkoma
(4-panels) but I also love the more
straightforward illustration approach and believe that if
experimented correctly, you can tell a perfect story by
drawing outside of typical structures.
982 where Do the iDeas for your Drawings come
from? how Do you Do your research? I love to get
ideas and inspiration from just about everything!
From people watching, collecting vintage artwork
to listening to British radio stories. However,
most of my ideas suddenly hit me when I’m chin-
wagging with friends.
983 w
ho are your favorite illustrators? are you
trying to follow in their footsteps? I have so many
favorites from the East (Asumiko Nakamura,
Nananan Kiriko, Hayao Miyazaki and Chica
Umino) to the West (Aubrey Beardsley, Kay
Nielsen, Edmund Dulac and Gustav Klimt) I’m
footstep following, yes.
984 w
hat Does your work Desk look like? what
can we come across? Lots of light and a window to
stare out of (very handy). My selection of inks,
pencils, pastels, art tools, two trusty laptops, nail
polish (believe it!), mouse-pens, scanner, printer,
jewelry, reference books and of course, green
tea...
985 D
o you always use the same tools or Do you
change DepenDing on the piece youre working on?
I usually stick to the very traditional pencil and
Indian inks mixed with a digital finish. Depending
on the piece and what I’m looking for I may lean
more to digital tools (Illustrator, Photoshop) or
just stay with the inks.

986 how Do you make your Drawings come to
life? I always look for the quirky or the odd-ball
in my work. My characters shouldn’t always be
“visually perfect,” having lovable personalities
and an alternative outlook adds color to a story!
You can’t overdo it, it’s a balancing act.
987 w
hat aDvice woulD you give to a novice
illustrator trying to make a name for himself? I think
the most important thing is to discover why you
love illustrating and what youre looking for.
Don’t worry about everyone else and don’t lose
confidence in yourself. Find like-minded friends
and support each other. And build a website!
988 w
hat has changeD about your style of
Drawing since you began? When I first started
drawing I wanted to be like everyone else. After
studying art on my own time, and focusing on
my skills, I have now developed my own style,
which isn’t made up of everything I wanted ten
years ago, but of everything I am now. I hope to
continue to develop and grow artistically though!
989 w
hat gooD habits shoulD a comic
illustrator have? Patience with themselves and
with others. Discipline; this includes saying “no”
to meeting friends on a Friday evening because
you absolutely must finish that page, to drawing
the same character over and over again. Finally,
good communication, to express all of the above!
990 w
hat is the greatest acknowleDgement you
coulD hope to achieve for your work? I feel blessed
that my work has snuggled its way out there, and I
have been very fortunate. I’ll be more than happy
though with people appreciating my work and
sharing it, but I would love for my work to cross
the boundary of illustration and manga, to fine art.
