After training as an illustrator,
Emiko Goto started her career
as a freelance artist and
illustrator, which led her to
work in the publishing and
advertising industry. Her work
has appeared on book covers,
magazines and advertisements,
and has also been seen in
exhibitions in popular Japanese
galleries, such as HB Gallery,
Dazzle and the National Art
Center in Kyoto.

re you trying to follow in tHeir footsteps? I am
a fan of Hokusai, the ukiyo-e artist. I may be
unconsciously following his work.

sitting down to draw? I make a cup of tea and
check my e-mails.

Generally I use drawing software. Sometimes
I draw with crayons on paper. It depends on the
work.

been keeping my favorite classic mangas since
I was child. But I like the new styles of manga,
also. I love both.

you trying to folloW in their footsteps? I like Patrick
Nagel. I wouldn’ say I’m trying to follow in his
footsteps, but the impact of his work and his
passion were influential to me.

can We come across? Coffee and cigarettes. Every
day I slurp coffee and smoke constantly.

I love how a series of Japanese manga always
connect together to make one huge story. Also,
Japanese mangas have so much variation, it’s
unbelievable. To us, in Japan, manga is part of our
everyday existence, like common sense!

I focus on making characters who have a strong
impact, characters which are unique. Onle one in
the world. I also animate them.

achieve for your Work? My own designer textiles. A way for my
pictures to be multiplied over and over!
146 What advice Would you give to a novice
illustrator trying to make a name for himself? Give
yourself a name, one that’s never been heard
before, but when you hear it you won’t forget it!

hat has changed about your style of
draWing since you began? I was strongly affected
after seeing Moebius. Then, I started to take
influence from those around me. For example,
my friend who has a funny face, or animals
and nature. I mixed them with characters and
illustrations from my imagination, and that
became my style. I’m also really into 80s and
pop art!

learned that you Would like to pass on to others? To
love. To care. To help people enjoy themselves. To
