991 Where do the ideas for your draWings
come from? hoW do you do your research? I’ve
always had a keen interest in anthropology,
history and culture and tend to travel a lot. Asian
imagery inspire me: Thai folk paintings, Chinese
landscapes, Japanese calligraphy and Buddhist
religious paintings.

ho are your favorite illustrators? are you
trying to folloW in their footsteps? My influences
tend to draw more from fine art than recent
commercial illustrators. I have always admired
Cy Twombly, Robert Longo, Rauschenberg, Franz
Kline, Josef Albers, Antoni Tapies and Francis
Bacon. It’s historic futurism, sampling from old,
codifying forms and remixing that into something
new that informs my work.

hat does your Work desk look like? What
can We come across? My home is my studio and
my desk is multifunctional, both a work desk
and a dinner table ;-) so I keep it to a minimum.
A powerbook, pens, paper, surrounded by books,
artifacts and antiquities that inspire me.

hat is the first thing you do before
sitting doWn to draW? I think, write and surf
online a lot. I take a walk and get lost to allow
some fresh thinking to emerge as a result of
experiencing a new environment.

o you prefer the classic guidelines from
m
anga or experimenting With neW channels? I don’t
consider myself a manga artist, but I draw upon
manga culture and reinterpret that into my work.
