of Arts. Ayako works across
different fields, including
Japanese cartoon, philosophy,
entertainment, and research.
She has approached manga
culture and contemporary art
from her own unique angle.
Recently, she has been

081 Where do the ideas for your draWings come
from? hoW do you do your research? My ideas come
from my dreams, personal life happenings and
things seen on TV, in movies or read in books. Most
of my research is done through the Internet, books
and personal experiences.
082 What does your Work desk look like?
W
hat can We come across? A chaotic mess until I
move things in order to work. There are old sales
receipts and jewelry, art markers and drawing
supplies, my computer and tablet and stacks of
manga, artbooks and artwork.

hat are your favorite tools or draWing
programs, and Why? Various art markers, inking
pens, Deleter ComicWorks and Photoshop are
my favorite tools. I love the feeling of working
with traditional medium, and I love the ease of
editing my work digitally.

hat do you like about manga? What does

anga have that european or american comics dont?
The art and storytelling styles and personal
connections I get from most manga series stories
and characters appeal far more to me than that of
most European or American comics.

oW do you make your draWings come to
life? I try to get into the mind of the characters to
get a better feel for them in order to capture their
personality and character within the artwork. And
sticking your tongue out while drawing helps too!

086 What advice Would you give to a novice
illustrator trying to make a name for himself?
Put yourself out there! Be it selling your work
at conventions or posting it on online art
communities. The more you make yourself
and your work visibly present, the more you’ll
become known.

o you feel the need to better yourself When
it comes to your Work? to What extent? Absolutely!
In most everything, from storytelling to anatomy
to how I use both traditional and digital mediums,
I’m always looking to improve something. One
can never stop at improving her work!

anga: is it art? It most certainly is!
From each little panel on every page to the full
colored covers and creating all series related
merchandise, such as posters, figures and
animation, it’s all works of art!

hat good habits should a comic
illustrator have? Practice, practice, practice! Be
it simple little sketches to full blown full colored
completed illustrations, practice makes perfect,
improves your skills and keeps you in shape!

hat is the greatest acknoWledgement you
could hope to achieve for your Work? Having my
series turned into an animated or live action show
or movie! Seeing and hearing the characters I’ve
breathed life into moving on screen would be an
absolutely incredible accomplishment!
