356 3D Animation for the Raw Beginner Using Maya
Overall, we might want to apply our texture with a cylindrical mapping but to smaller
pieces of the Moai, perhaps doing the neck, face, and torso separately. We also need to be
careful about exposing the seam when we animate and render our model.
Next, we create a file texture and choose a photograph of a granite rock. We apply it
to the Moai. We will look at two closeups of the left side of its face. Figure13.38 shows
the cylindrical mapping, and Figure13.39 shows the automatic mapping. This time,
the automatic mapping is better by far. The cylindrical mapping stretched out parts
of the texture. The automatic mapping kept the granularity more uniform in size and
shape.

ere is an overriding point here. If we start out with a geometric primitive, in this
case a polygon cylinder, our job of cleaning up the (u, v) grid so that we get an even tex-
ture is going to be harder if the primitive has been dramatically altered during the mod-
eling process. e original cylinder, especially on the face of the Moai, has been pushed
and pulled so much that the (u, v) grid has been badly distorted, giving us a challenging
texture job.
