This chapter explores Call Level Interfaces as provided by IBM's DB2 CLI and Microsoft's ODBC. IBM's CLI provides a library (or driver) of DBMS functions that can be used to access a DB2 database. Microsoft's ODBC provides a standard of functions that can be used to access a vendor's DBMS such as DB2. Both CLI and ODBC were originally based on parts of the X/Open CLI Standard. Much of the X/Open CLI Standard has been accepted as part of the ISO CLI Standard (ISO/IEC 9075-3:1995 SQL/CLI). ODBC 3.51 does contain considerable functionality that is not part of the ISO standard, much of which is being added to the next draft.
