Configuration Assistant Tool

DB2 UDB v8 introduces the Configuration Assistant, which replaces the Client Configuration Assistant. The new Configuration Assistant not only has many features offered by the Control Center, it also has enhanced functionality by offering the following:

  • The ability to invoke the Control Center from the Configuration Assistant.

  • The option to configure both local and remote servers, including DB2 Connect servers.

  • The ability to create configuration templates without affecting the local configuration.

  • Import and export capabilities for exchanging configuration templates with other systems.

  • Improved response time for discovery requests along with the option to refresh the list of discovered objects at any time.

  • The ability to view and update applicable database manager configuration parameters and DB2 registry variables.

Accessing DB2 Servers Using the Configuration Assistant

Similar to the DB2 Control Center, the CA has the capability to establish a connection to DB2 servers using Known or Search Discovery. A DB2 connection also can be established manually. To manually configure a DB2 connection using the CA, the wizard shown in Figure 2.13 can be used. The wizard has eight sections in which the following information must be provided. Within the wizard, the connection can be tested and if it is not successful, the connection information can be changed.

  • Source— Select how to configure a connection: use profile, search the network, or do it manually.

  • Protocol— Select the protocol over which the connection will be configured.

  • TCP/IP— This menu tab dynamically changes to the selected protocol.

  • Database— Database name information, such as name, alias, description.

  • Data source— Optionally register this database for ODBC interface.

  • Node Options— Specify the operating system and the remote instance name.

  • System Options— Specify the system name, host name (TCP/IP), operating system.

  • Security Options— Specify the security options that DB2 will use for authentication.
