Installation

The Net Search Extender server is available on AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Linux, Windows NT, Windows 2000, OS/390, and z/OS. Net Search Extender currently, at the time of general availability, will not support multipartition database clusters. NGRAM indexing is available for all DB2 supported languages. There are some operating system differences between workstation and host platforms. This chapter concentrates on the workstation platforms behavior.

The installation process varies by platform. For UNIX platforms, log in as a root user. For Windows platforms, log in as an administrator. On AIX, Text Extender is installed using the smit tool or installp. On Sun, the product is installed using pkgadd. On HP-UX, use the sam tool. On Windows platforms, run the setup.exe executable. Some UNIX platforms such as Sun and HP require certain operating resources configured with kernel parameters. These are covered in more detail in the product documentation. Be sure to run db2iupdt on UNIX and Linux to update the database instance with the new package information. The installation can be verified by running a Net Search Extender verification script. The instance can be started or stopped using the CLP commands or the DB2 Control Center:

db2text start
db2text stop

Net Search Extender also can be stopped and started using the DB2 Control Center. Right-click on the instance and select Net Search Extender. A popup appears to start or stop the search service. See Figure 16.1 for an example.
