Chapter 16. DB2 Net Search Extender

DB2 Net Search Extender provides highly optimized search functionality that scales well with a large number of concurrent queries. It is well suited to Internet applications that have a high volume of users. It supports word, phrase, stemmed, or fuzzy search methods. It can deformat XML, HTML, and General Purpose Format (GPF) documents. Net Search Extender v8 combines the functionality of both DB2 Text Information Extender v7.2 and Net Search Extender v7.2. Net Search Extender has a basic set of features available in Text Extender with greatly improved performance.

Net Search Extender has many performance enhancements. It has support for in-memory tables, which cache frequently accessed data to avoid costly disk I/O. The extender will presort the results during index creation to save time during query execution. Index creation only takes a fraction of the time required by Text Extender. Also, a maximum number of concurrent searches can be set to not exceed system resources. This is useful to avoid memory from being swapped to disk when memory is low. Net Search Extender is recommended for any application that does not require linguistic searches.
