Creating an Azure AD instance

  1. Log in to the Azure classic portal as global administrator (https://manage.windowsazure.com).
  2. Click on NEW | App Services | ACTIVE DIRECTORY | DIRECTORY | CUSTOM CREATE:
  1. In the new window, we need to provide the following:
    • NAME: The organization name of the Azure AD tenant.
    • DOMAIN NAME: Azure AD needs an initial domain name, and it will have the UPN suffix .onmicrosoft.com. You can choose a name you like for this. Once our own domain is added, the default domain can be changed to it.
    • COUNTRY OR REGION: We can select the preferred country or region for resource placement.
  2. Once the information has been provided, click on the checkmark button:
  1. Once the directory is created, click on Active Directory from the left-hand side navigation panel. It will list down the Azure AD instance we created. Click on it to load the properties window.
  2. Then click on the CONFIGURE:
  1. On the page, scroll down to domain services; there, click on YES to enable domain services for this directory. Then, from the dropdown in front of CONNECT DOMAIN SERVICES TO THIS VIRTUAL NETWORK, select the virtual network we created in the previous step:
  1. It takes about 30 minutes to enable the service and associate resources with the given virtual network. Once it is done, we can see it has the IP address assigned from the range we defined:
