The following is a brief description of each new feature and it’s location in this book.

  • Expression Web Studio 3 (p. 1, 385)Expression Web 3 is part of the Microsoft Expression Studio 3, which also includes Expression Design 3, Expression Blend 3 plus Sketchflow, and Expression Encoder 3.

  • Expression Encoder 3 Screen Capture (p. 3, 393)A stand-alone companion program of Expression Encoder that allows you to capture screens or video on your computer.

  • SuperPreview (p. 3, 64-65)SuperPreview makes it easy to view and compare a Web page or sections of a Web page in multiple browsers at the same time. You can also start a stand-alone version on the Start menu under Microsoft Expression.

  • Hide Panels (p. 8-9)When you no longer need a panel or need more room, you can close a panel or turn on AutoHide to collapse a panel until when you need it. The AutoHide All Panels command is on the Panels menu.

  • Publishing view (p. 14-15, 352-353, 356-357)Displays a comparison of files in the current local Web site and the remote site. From this view, you can copy a working version of a site to the live site on a service provider’s Web server.

  • Close Web Page (p. 20)Click the tab to display the Web page, and then click the Close button on the tab next to the name.

  • Manage Multiple Web Sites (p. 25, 42, 354)The Managed Sites List dialog box allows you to add, remove, and manage multiple Web sites. The Manage Sites List is on the Site menu.

  • New Web Sites (p. 25, 30-31)The New dialog box allows you to create and work with multiple Web sites. The New Site command is on the Site menu.

  • Open Web Sites (p. 32-33)The Open dialog box allows you to open and work with multiple Web sites. The Open Site command is on the Site menu.

  • FTPS and SFTP (p. 34-35, 352-353)When you import a Web site, Expression Web uses the to step you through the process. With the Import Web Site Wizard, you can transfer files using SFTP (Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol) and FTPS (File Transfer Protocol over Secure Sockets Layer). You can also add and manage multiple FTPS or SFTP Web sites for publishing.

  • ASP Pages (p. 36-37, 337)Creates Active Server Pages (.asp), which execute code on the Web server instead of your browser.

  • Snapshot Panel (p. 61)With the Snapshot panel, you can preview Web pages for the different browsers installed on your computer right in Expression Web. The Snapshot panel provides a quick and easy way to preview Web pages.

  • Silverlight media (p. 162-163)After you create a Silverlight 2.0 or 3.0 media application using a Silverlight authoring program, such as Expression Blend or Expression Encoder, you can insert it into a Web page with Expression Web.

  • Silverlight video (p. 164)You can encode (using Expression Encoder) and insert videos as a Silverlight video into a page. The formats include: WMV (Windows Media Video), AVI (Audio Video Interleave), MPG, ASF (Advanced Systems Format), DVR-MS (Microsoft Digital Video Recording), MPEG, and TS (Transport Stream for MPEG).

  • Deep Zoom image (p. 165, 400)An image you can smoothly zoom and pan images in high resolution.

  • Publishing Settings (p. 352-353, 355)You can add and manage multiple Web sites for publishing. In addition, you can set the number of simultaneous connections to the same site, which reduces the publishing time by transferring several files at once, instead of one at a time.

  • Publishing Status Panel (p. 362)The Publishing Status panel displays the files to be published (Queue), the files that failed, the files that completed, and a log with statistics.

  • Source Control (p. 363)Expression Web 3 supports the Team Foundation source control system, which allows you to manage site files for a team of people and minimize the risk of one person inadvertently deleting the changes of someone else.

  • Deep Zoom Composer (p. 399, 400)A stand-alone program, available free for download on the Microsoft Web site, that you can import images, arrange and position them, and then export the results as an image you can smoothly zoom and pan images in high resolution.

What Happened To . . .

  • Add-InsThe feature was removed from the product.

  • Close SiteThe command on the File menu was moved to the Site menu and renamed to Close.

  • Customize Toolbars, Menus, and OptionsThe feature on the Toolbars submenu on the View menu to customize Toolbars, Menus, and Options was removed from the product.

  • Folder List CommandThe command was removed from the View menu. The command remains available on the Panels menu.

  • Export FileThe command on the Export submenu on the File menu was removed from the product.

  • Export Web PackageThe command on the Export submenu on the File menu was moved to the Site menu and renamed to Export to Web Package.

  • Import FileThe command on the Import submenu on the File menu was moved to the Site menu on the Import submenu.

  • Insert FileThe command on the Insert menu was removed from the product. You can copy the text in source document and then use the Paste Text command on the Edit menu.

  • Import Personal Web PackageThe command on the Import submenu on the File menu was moved to the Site menu on the Import submenu and renamed to Import from Web Package.

  • MacrosThe feature was removed from the product.

  • New Web SiteThe command on the New submenu on the File menu was moved to the Site menu and renamed to New Site.

  • New Window CommandThe command on the Window menu was removed from the product.

  • Open in New Window CommandThe command on the Windows menu was removed from the product.

  • Open File FormatsThe following Open file formats have been removed from the product: WordPerfect 5.x, 6.0, Word 2007 (.docx), and Works (6.0 - 9.0). If you want to open a Word 97 - 2003 document, you can use the File command on the Import submenu on the File menu to import the content into an existing Web page.

  • Open SiteThe command on the File menu was moved to the Site menu.

  • Publish SiteThe command on the File menu was moved to the Site menu and changed to incorporate new features.

  • Recent SitesThe submenu on the File menu was moved to the Site menu.

  • Service OptionsThe option was removed from the Application Options dialog box.

  • Site Menu CommandsThe Folders, Remote Web Site (changed to Publishing), Reports (submenu taken out), and Hyperlinks commands were moved to the Site submenu on the View menu. The Recalculate Hyperlinks command was moved to Tools menu.

  • Task Panes MenuThe menu was renamed to Panels menu.

  • Use your current Windows color schemeThe option in the Application Options dialog box was removed from the product.
