Forward outgoing e-mails

For testing purposes, it is recommended that we forward all outgoing e-mail to a private e-mail address. We can do this by updating the following two e-mail properties in the System Mailboxes | Administration | Email properties module:

  • Email sending enabled: Checked
  • Send all email to this test email address (non-production testing): (Specify your private e-mail ID here)

Now all outgoing e-mails will be forwarded to the e-mail ID we specified in the e-mail properties. This is very useful for testing the notification features and ensuring that test e-mails do not land up in end users' mailboxes. You may receive tons of pending e-mails from the system, so ensure that you only specify an e-mail address you are authorized to use.

You must switch to the Global application scope to make changes in the Email Properties page. You can switch to a global scope by using the application scope drop-down menu in the Developers tab of the System Settings dialog window, which is shown when you click on the cog (settings) icon on the top-right of the main ServiceNow interface. Once you modify the e-mail properties, click on the Save button on the page header to confirm your changes, and ensure that you revert back to the Travel Booking Application we have been working on in this book.

Now that the notification and the e-mail template we created are working as expected, let us test the notification by trying to send the e-mail by assigning a travel-booking request to a user.
