Don’t pick up nails

We’ve all had Tony’s experience—instead of nails it’s just something else that distracts us from our goals. We knew a manager who would interrupt any meeting, even a large client-focused one, to leap out of his chair to answer his phone, without even knowing who might be calling him. And we’ll guess that you’ve met folks who can easily be diverted by a knock on the door, or a phone call, or a text message to drop what they’re doing in order to deal with the interruption, no matter how trivial.

These are well-intentioned folks, make no mistake, but they have let urgency substitute for importance. That ringing phone or insistent knock just begs for a response, but too many times they represent issues that simply should be ignored. They’re nothing more than bright shiny nails.
