Publishing Site Content with the Gutenberg Editor

WordPress was first introduced as a blogging tool and then became a content management system. These days, WordPress is used to develop advanced applications beyond content management systems. However, most existing WordPress sites are basic sites that use CMS features. So, we need the ability to add and manage content quickly. As a solution, Page Builders were developed to speed up the process of building content pages by dragging and dropping built-in elements. However, we need separate page builder plugins as the WordPress editor doesn't have any built-in page building features.

The new Gutenberg editor was introduced as a solution to allow block-based editing to speed up this process, as well as help with editing the page layout without breaking other parts of it. In this stage, Gutenberg is not considered a fully-fledged page builder. However, it may be turned into a complete page builder in the future since the Gutenberg editor has become the default editor since WordPress 5. Therefore, it's a must to understand the process of using the editor and its tools in order to work with sites that use WordPress 5+. In this chapter, you will learn how to create posts and pages with the features of the new Gutenberg editor and use quick methods to add content compared to the previous Visual editor. The goal of this chapter is to teach you how to get used to new block-based editing with Gutenberg.

In this chapter, we will learn about the following recipes:

  • Adding and removing Gutenberg blocks
  • Using the Visual and Code editors with the block editor
  • Creating reusable Gutenberg blocks
  • Styling built-in content blocks
  • Embedding content from external services
