How it works...

The default WordPress installation enables pinging using the Allow link notifications from other blogs setting. We started the recipe by enabling it in case you had disabled it before. Once it's enabled, WordPress will start pinging to the services specified in the Writing | Update Services section under the Settings menu. We can add or remove services using this setting for default WordPress pinging features.

Once these services are set up, WordPress will send a ping each time a post is published or updated. So, it will create a large number of pings in sites where the content is updated frequently. In order to prevent frequent pings, we used the WordPress Ping Optimizer plugin. This plugin also allows us to configure the pinging services. By default, it will list the pinging services in the default Writing | Update Services section. Then, we enabled the Limit excessive pinging in short time option and set pings to once every 5 minutes.

This plugin will only ping the services when publishing a post, so unnecessary pings on every edit will be prevented. Also, the plugin checks the last ping before pinging again. If we are pinging multiple times within 5 minutes, the plugin will prevent the additional pings in that time period.

We can check the Ping Log section on the bottom part of the same screen to see how pings are generated by this plugin:

As you can see, the pinging is only done for new posts. The default pings executed by WordPress in post-editing is blocked by this plugin and logs the entries as NOT Pinging
