Predictive DRS with vRealize Operations

What about preventing contention in the first place?

With vSphere Predictive DRS (pDRS), this is not an issue.

Predictive DRS is a new feature in vSphere 6.5 that leverages the predictive analytics of vRealize Operations with the powerful resource scheduler algorithm of vSphere DRS. It identifies workload patterns of the virtual machines in order to predict future resource needs. If a host doesn't have enough resources to keep up with future demands, predictive DRS will move workloads to other hosts in the cluster before contention can even occur.

Enabling pDRS is easy. Perform the following steps to enable pDRS:

  1. Log in to the vSphere Web Client and select the cluster where you want to enable pDRS. Navigate to the Configure tab, Services, and select vSphere DRS. Click on the Edit button:
  1. Expand DRS Automation and select Enable Predictive DRS.
  2. Click OK to apply the change.
  3. Navigate to the Administration tab and then Solutions, and find the VMware vSphere solution. Click on the gear icon to configure it. Expand Advanced Settings, and in the Provide data to vSphere Predictive DRS drop-down menu, select True. Click Save Settings and you are done:
