Integrating vRealize Automation with vRealize Operations

Now that we have seen how vRealize Automation works in conjunction with vRealize Operations to optimize placement of vRealize Automation managed workloads, let’s see what needs to be configured to enable this integration.

Perform the following steps to configure integration between vRealize Automation and vRealize Operations:

  • Log in to vRealize Automation and navigate to Infrastructure | Endpoints, and then Endpoints. Click New | Management, and then vRealize Operations:

Enter the following information:

  • Name: Friendly name for the vRealize Operations instance
  • Address: https://FQDN_Of_vROPS/suite-api
  • Username: vRealize Operations Administrator username
  • Password: Password for the administrator user

If asked, accept the certificate and verify that the connection is set up correctly by clicking the Test Connection button. Click OK to save and exit.

Navigate to Infrastructure | Reservations Placement Policy and check the Use vRealize Operations Manager for Placement Recommendations. Click OK to save:

  • Log in to vRealize Operations. Navigate to the Administration tab and then Solutions, and find the VMware vRealize Automation solution. Click on the gear icon to configure it.

Under instance name, add the following information:

  • Display Name
  • vRealize Automation URL

Click on the plus sign under credentials and fill in the SysAdmin and SuperUser information. Click OK to save once finished. Accept the certificates and verify the connection is successful:

The SysAdmin user is typically the Administrator user in the default vsphere.local vRealize Automation tenant. In this example, SuperUser is a user that has Tenant and Infrastructure Admin permissions in all vRealize Automation tenants.

Note: If the user you configure here does not have those permissions in all tenants, you will not see results for the respective tenants.

Previously in this chapter, we discussed the Workload Policy Settings. We said that the Consolidate Workload setting determines how well all of your virtual machines are combined. This policy affects new virtual machines deployed through vRealize Automation. Make sure to review the policy and make adjustments if necessary to meet your business needs.
