3. Browser locker

Browser locker is one of the rarest ransomwares seen. This malware family was seen in 2014 and is not so popular now. This ransomware doesn't pose an intense threat, like most of the other ransomware families. They can be treated as hoax ransomware rather than a real one. Forcibly terminating the browser process helps in most cases. They do not encrypt files on the system. The browser locker creates a popup saying that the browser is locked. Each time the victim tries to close the browser or switch tabs, the same message pops up. The pop up is created using JavaScript. The infection can happen when the victim visits an infected site. This kind of ransomware was easy to code and since it is only browser dependent, it can act as cross-platform ransomware, which means it can execute on any browser irrespective of the operating system, without making much in the way of code changes and hence can execute on most victims' systems.
