Applying for a Job

You can configure the job-application process in one of three ways. When you find a job that you want to apply for, the corresponding apply button will appear on the job posting based on the application process you selected.

Apply on company website: Click the button to visit the company’s website and apply.

Apply now: Click the button to upload your résumé and cover letter to apply. You can also request referrals from people you’re connected to on LinkedIn who work for the company.

Apply with LinkedIn: Click the button to apply with your LinkedIn profile. You can add a note to the job poster and request referrals from your LinkedIn connections who work for the company (no résumé required).

QUICK TIP
You can create a résumé directly from your LinkedIn profile contents, save it as a PDF file, print it, and share it using the LinkedIn Resume Builder tool at http://resume.linkedinlabs.com/.

Again, the person who posts the job opening for the company determines which application—and therefore, which type of apply button—appears with the posting. Just follow the directions provided by the employer based on their application process choice to apply.

WARNING
Uploaded résumés must be less than 200 KB. Cover letters must be less than 4,000 characters.

Of course, it’s important to take some time to make sure you look as good as possible on LinkedIn before you apply for job opportunities. For example, spend some time trying to get your LinkedIn profile 100 percent complete. Ask connections for recommendations (particularly those connections who can give you recommendations related to the types of jobs you want to apply to), and answer questions on LinkedIn Answers to demonstrate your knowledge. Join groups and be active across LinkedIn to establish your credibility and reputation. All of these professional activities will help you be more visible on LinkedIn and make you look more attractive to employers.

The Least You Need to Know

Use the LinkedIn job search tools, Company Pages, groups, and employee profiles to find job opportunities.

You can view the LinkedIn Jobs Directory when you’re not logged in to your LinkedIn account, but you can’t see all job listings unless you log in.

Job Seeker Premium accounts come with additional features and fees that can help serious job seekers.

Some job postings allow you to apply through LinkedIn without uploading a résumé. Others require résumé upload or require that you apply through the company website off of LinkedIn.
