Empowering the contemporary photographer
Photography has always been influenced by technological developments, and the current state of photography is one of inspiration, flexibility, and exchange. Images and knowledge overflow in an unlimited (some would say overwhelming) stream of social media feeds to catch a viewer’s attention in a ricochet of noise and attention overload. But what is at the very essence of photography for each of us? For me it is a childlike curiosity and the relishing of discovery, which can be as straightforward as Garry Winogrand’s “I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed” to experimenting with a new lens or effect to needing to look at the same subject over and over again to actually see what is there. The best photographers ask questions and work with cameras and image processing to develop answers. In this process, the questions will shift, and the answers-in-progress will require honest assessment and introspection.
I see the world more clearly through a viewfinder, and every day that I carry a camera—be it a smartphone or a high-end full-frame piece of equipment—I am interacting with the world, and as I look out…I am actually looking within. Listen to your images and you too will discover new worlds that are all around us. Be curious, be brave, and enjoy the process.
