System metrics

Let's start again with the general definition: with system metrics, you can determine which system resources (for example, storage, network, CPU, and disk utilization) your system uses and where conflicts might occur.

You can use these metrics to see performance trends:

  • As they grow linearly with time, you have to control the workload to see if it has increased and may need to be distributed to more hardware
  • If the workload is constant, the increase in metrics' values may be due to external factors such as background tasks and jobs, additional network activity, or device I/O
