Business metrics

Let's start again with the general definition: business metrics are about measuring and assessing business operations and transactions. You can use this information to determine if your application meets the previously-set business expectations.

An example: your application is a video streaming service. Typical business metrics for this would be:

  • A measure of the number of videos uploaded or downloaded over a period of time
  • A measure of the frequency at which videos are searched
  • A measure of how often videos have been watched successfully

Let's go back to the definition and go deeper into the details: a business metric typically includes telemetry inspection and aggregation at the enterprise level, as well as real-time snapshots and system behavior histories. This is then combined with a deeper study of pivots, time slices, and property filters, resulting in an accurate assessment of the business impact on the system.

In addition to creating this analytical data, business metrics also address more immediate issues, such as determining why business operations may fail, and alerting when different performance thresholds are exceeded.
