Modern IP networks require key services and functions. This chapter discusses those key services and functions. Enterprise, mid-tier, and small networks each have their own unique requirements. These requirements translate into network devices and design criteria. Different network components, where to position them, and how will be presented. This chapter will also provide an overview of essential network services such as IP address management (IPAM), Domain Name System (DNS), and Network Time Protocol (NTP). Finally, this chapter will introduce network access control (NAC). Network access control solutions include both visibility of IT assets and access control to the IP network.
