Hyper-V is supported on the following Windows Server 2016 operating system versions:
- Windows Server 2016 Standard edition
- Windows Server 2016 Datacenter edition
- Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V edition
- Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016 edition
Along with the software requirements, Hyper-V has some general hardware requirements. Some Hyper-V features require additional hardware requirements. The general Hyper-V hardware requirements include the following:
- A 64-bit processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT). SLAT is required to install virtualization components, but is not required to install Hyper-V management tools, such as Hyper-V cmdlets for PowerShell, Hyper-V manager, or others.
- A CPU that supports hardware-assisted virtualization. Intel processors have Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) and AMD processors have AMD Virtualization (AMD-V).
- Data Execution Prevention (DEP) must be hardware-enforced and enabled. Intel systems have Execute Disable Bit (XD bit) and AMD systems have No-Execute Bit (NX bit).
- VM Monitor Mode Extension.
- A minimum of 1 GB of RAM, and a recommended 2 GB of RAM. This does not include the memory requirements for virtual machines installed in guest partitions.
Each specific Hyper-V feature has its own special hardware requirements.
