Scalability

ReFS is designed to support significantly larger datasets than NTFS, without penalizing performance, which enables extremely large storage and file sizes. The following table shows the differences between the two filesystem limits:

Filesystem feature NTFS ReFS
Maximum file name length 255 *  255 *
Maximum path name length 32 K 32 K
Maximum file size 35 PB 256 TB
Maximum volume size 35 PB 256 TB

To better understand the preceding table, consult these points:

  • * means Unicode characters
  • TB = Terabytes = 1,000,000,000,000 B = 1012 bytes = 1,000 GB (Gigabytes)
  • PB = Petabytes = 1,000,000,000,000,000 B = 1015 bytes = 1,000 TB (Terabytes)
