Configuring the network

Unlike storage, where you need to configure a shared (or local) disk as a cluster disk, the failover cluster can discover each newly added network to a node and add it to a cluster. Of course, if the same network isn't configured on all nodes, the network won't be useful in the cluster. Once you add and configure a network adapter on each node, you'll be able to configure the cluster network.

As mentioned earlier, three unique network adapters and subnets, properly configured on each node, are highly recommended. The first network will be used for communication with other network services, the second one for cluster communication only, and the third one must be dedicated for communication with the storage. By default, the first added network will be configured for the communication with rest of network, as well for the cluster communication. Every subsequent network will be automatically configured for cluster communication only.

If you need to change these setting, you can do this using the Failover Cluster Manager console as follows:

  1. Open the Failover Cluster Manager console
  2. Click on Networks under the created cluster:

  1. You'll see all networks in the cluster and be able to edit the properties of each network:

In the Actions pane, under Networks, you'll see Live Migration Settings. This needs to be used to select which network should be dedicated to live migration.
