Summary

In this chapter, we have covered the types of pages you can create on SharePoint sites and how you can add functionality to pages with web parts. We took a look at standard, or wiki pages, and web part pages. We showed how you have more flexibility in laying out information on a standard page. You can even add web parts to a standard page along with text, pictures, or video.

We have seen the standard web parts that are included with SharePoint out of the box. We took a look at how to insert a web part on a page, and how to modify the appearance of a web part.

Pages and web parts are your tools for delivering content to users. You can easily build pages and add functionality with web parts using the templates, layouts, and libraries that come with SharePoint.

For advanced users, templates and web parts can be developed using tools such as Visual Studio and SharePoint Designer. Many web parts, though, can be downloaded for free or for a nominal fee. These web parts can supplement the functionality provided out of the box, often for specialized applications.

In the next chapter, we will take a look at My Sites, the personal web page for each individual SharePoint user to share information about themselves, their work, and area of expertise.
