Social aspects of My Sites

SharePoint's My Sites social networking component was originally introduced with SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and was rebranded and included in SharePoint Server 2007, with minimal feature changes. With SharePoint 2010, you will notice a myriad of new features. Some notable new features are explained in the following sections.

Ask Me About

This feature allows you to list topics that you feel you are knowledgeable about so that other people know to come to you for assistance on the subject matter.

Colleagues

This page consolidates and displays all of your colleagues. You can configure how this information is presented to other SharePoint users.

Note Board

This feature displays notes and comments written by you that other users will see when you visit your My Site. It is similar to the wall displays used on Facebook.

Organizational chart

The organizational chart has been redesigned to be much more interactive and user friendly. You can easily locate your colleagues in the organization as well as navigate the organizational hierarchy.

The structure of the organizational chart is based on the organization's Active Directory. This is a good example of SharePoint leveraging corporate information in another system.

What's happening?

This micro-blogging feature allows you to enter a brief description of what you are currently up to. It is very similar to functionality provided by Twitter, with the exception that the audience consuming your updates is your organization's SharePoint community. This feature can be very useful to quickly post information and to engage in concise, directed conversation.

Office Communicator 2010 will display this information status from your My Site.
