Video device

Under this menu, you will be able to set certain settings with regards to the Raspberry Pi camera device. This means that you can set the camera name and some basic specifications relevant to the environment in which you are planning to set this security system up. So, here is a list of parameters that you can change.

  • Camera Name: This field is actually just a name for you. Set this to something that represents this camera; for example, if the camera is in the garden, you can name it Garden Camera.
  • Camera Device: This field is the device name of the camera and unfortunately, you cannot edit it.
  • Light Switch Detection: You can enable this if you want sudden changes; for example, a camera in your room will treat light on/off as motion. To prevent this from happening, use this option.
  • Automatic Brightness: This will enable software automatic brightness; as a result, this camera will automatically adjust the brightness according to the amount of sun, just as new Android phones adjust their brightness. Note that some cameras already support this feature, so in this case, you don't need to activate this if your camera already handles it.
  • Video Resolution: Here, you can set the video resolution of the camera. The higher the resolution, the more space you will need on your SD card and the more bandwidth it will need to use in order to stream.
  • Video Rotation: You can always rotate your video from your Raspberry Pi Zero W board if for any reason, you find upside down stream footage.
  • Frame Rate: Last but not least, you can set a number of frames that will be sent every second. Again, keep in mind that the higher this is, the smoother the video, but also, this will increase the amount of storage needed and of course the bandwidth.

Now, we will cover the menu settings as they appear in the Video Device menu:
