Networking

Setting up your website is one thing. Setting up all the scripts, rules, and networking parameters that will allow you to access the website all over the world is another and very important thing. In this section, we will discuss how you can access your router to define and set up some rules so that your website can be accessed from everyone. Also, we will discuss some things about your dynamic home IP address, define a problem that you may face and how you can solve it. Lastly, we will have an introduction to security layers that will be discussed in more detail in the next chapter.

By now, you should have access to your website locally. To sum up all the previous chapters, here is a step-by-step guide showing what you should have performed. It is important to have a look back before reading the Networking section, where we will perform some actions relevant to the router and the local network.

  1. Download or create your website files.
  2. Use FileZilla to transfer website files to the Raspberry Pi.
  3. Install the XAMPP package on the Raspberry Pi.
  4. Create a new folder under /opt/lampp/htdocs/ with the name mywebsite.
  5. Move all the websites into /opt/lampp/htdocs/mywebsite.
  6. Verify from your mobile phone or any other computer in your local network that the <raspberrypi-IP>/mywebsite URL is valid and it displays your website.
