Modifying group ownership with chown

The chown command can also be used to modify group ownership of a file or directory by prefixing a group name with a colon (:) sign or period (.) sign, as shown in the following command:

$ chown :group <filename_or_directoryname>

The following screenshot shows the usage of the chown command to change the group of myfile to jack:
