The PPPoE service is generally used to fill the gap between PPP connections (dial-up) and Ethernet connections (broadband). Internet service providers often want to enable their customers to use their existing dial-up authentication systems over broadband lines, and PPPoE allows ISPs to do just that, with a simple shim at the line-encoding stage enabling them to convert from PPP to PPPoE. Setting up PPPoE with pfSense requires us to add a firewall rule as well, and we did that.
