How to do it...

  1. Navigate to Services | DNS Resolver.
  2. Check the Enable DNS Resolver checkbox.

  1. If you want to ensure that all nodes listed in Status | DHCP Leases that specified their hostname when requesting a lease are registered in the DNS resolver, check the Register DHCP leases in the DNS Resolver checkbox.
  2. If you want to ensure that all nodes with a static DHCP mapping are registered with the DNS resolver, check the Register DHCP static mappings in DNS Resolver checkbox.
  1. Specify individual hosts to be served as DNS records by scrolling down to Host Overrides and clicking on the Add button. Devices on this list will be checked first, so even if a record exists elsewhere, a record here takes precedence and is immediately returned. On the Edit Host Override page, you can enter the following parameters for a host:
    • The Host edit box is where you specify the host without the domain part.
    • The Domain edit box is where you specify the domain.
    • The IP Address edit box is where you specify the IP address of the host.
    • The Description edit box is where you may enter a brief (nonparsed) description.
    • You may also specify additional names for the host in the Additional Names for this Host section. Click on the Save button when you are done making changes.

  1. Specify a DNS server for a particular domain by scrolling down to Domain Overrides and clicking on the Add button. These records are checked immediately after the individual records are defined above, so a match here will take precedence over records that may exist elsewhere. On the Edit Domain Override page, you can enter the following parameters:
    • The Domain edit box is where you specify the domain to override.
    • The IP Address edit box is where you specify the IP address of the authoritative DNS server for the domain.
    • The Use SSL/TLS for DNS Queries forwarded to this server checkbox will cause pfSense to send queries for this domain using SSL/TLS on port 853, thereby enabling the use of encrypted DNS traffic.
    • The Description edit box is where you may enter a brief (nonparsed) description.
  2. When you are done making changes, click on the Save button.
  3. Click on the Apply Changes button.
