How it works...

Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is a link state protocol, which means it will try to calculate the shortest path to a destination based on changing network parameters, such as data transfer rates. A cost is calculated, based on account bandwidth, delay, and load. It thus differentiates itself from distance vector protocols, such as RIP, which take into account dynamic routing and changing network topologies, but do not take into account network conditions.
