Maltego is an expansive tool and operates in different modes. After a successful login, a user is prompted to choose the machine to be used against a target. The machine simply refers to the type of footprinting a user wants to be done against a target. The four important options are:

• Company stalker: Company stalker is important for gathering email information
• Footprint L1: L1 is useful for quick and light information gathering about a target
• Footprint L2: L2 is useful when gathering moderate amounts of information
• Footprint L3: L3 is useful for exhaustive data gathering about a target

For the machines to activate, one has to choose the most ideal for the desired purpose. Let us go with the fourth option, Footprint L3. Note that this option takes more time to load and it uses up more resources.
