Behavioral changes

Lies can be detected by observing an unprecedented change of behavior in a respondent when a certain question is posed. It is a commonly used technique in the interrogation room as it helps interrogators detect subtle lies. If a respondent suddenly changes the way he or she is seated, their posture, or speech pattern, it is likely that the response going to be given will be deceptive. However, it is not necessarily that these behavior changes always indicate lies as they could be genuine changes. Maybe one was confined to a certain sitting position for long or maybe the posture initially assumed is tiring. Therefore, these behaviors are not accurate pointers but they are a cause of interest in the responses given. The reason why behavioral changes indicate deception is that they are taken as delays to allow a respondent to fabricate an answer or to give him or her ample time to decide on whether to reveal certain information.
