Social authority

Social authority comes from informal group settings, such as a group of friends, alumni of a certain university, or even co-workers. In groups, people are easily influenced by the actions taken by other members of the group. This is best described as mob psychology where people will want to do what the majority is doing. The group will have a certain authoritative figure where a particular person has more control of the group due to other factors, such as physique, wealth, or eloquence. There are many other things that can make a group member stand out and have some implied control over the group where other members would follow all he or she says. Social engineers are able to get this implied authority by being more pronounced in the group. By doing so, they gain the social authority and can direct the group or request group members to do certain things. Complying with a group leader's instructions is perceived as beneficial and therefore group members will be ready to do as they are told by the group leader. They will operate on autopilot and obey commands given by the leader without much thought. Even if they are asked for certain sensitive information, they will divulge it. Social engineers will get along with people in groups with the aim of getting control over them. Some of the things that they use to get the implied authority are clothes, job titles, and automobiles. Just by wearing the right clothes, using the correct gestures, and issuing fake business cards, social engineers manage to get authority fast in groups that they choose to join. There are many informal groups that organizational employees join and that is where social engineers strike when least expected.
