Operation Chameleon

The scammer known as Chameleon was caught by the police. He was said to have scammed five women in the last two years.

Nancy was among those women who were scammed by Chameleon, and actually she was his biggest hit because she lost her apartment and was left with $15,000 banking loan. Nancy is a 47-year-old doctor, living alone, never married. She is an active Facebook and Twitter user with more than 6,000 followers. Nancy and Chameleon met on Twitter. She didn't know that she had met the biggest mistake of her life. They communicated first over Twitter, then Facebook Messenger, lastly WhatsApp. Chameleon impersonated a 42-year-old, newly-divorced electrical engineer who had two offices in two different cities. During their chats, Chameleon seemed to be a decent and mature person with a sense of humor and life experience. After communicating over the internet for a while, they decided to meet in person. Chameleon was really a handsome guy, 185 cm tall, athletic body, talkative, the kind of man who can make friends wherever he goes. On the contrary, Nancy was a simple woman that you might see on the street every day, 170 cm tall, with a cute and pure face, a tiny bit overweight, talkative, but most importantly, tired of loneliness and consequently vulnerable, even if she didn't accept it in the back of her mind. They had been dating for almost a month when Nancy asked Chameleon to move into her apartment. After a while, they started to talk and dream about happy days in the future. Nancy had butterflies in her stomach. Everything was perfect. She was with a perfect man, well-educated, kind, caring, and romantic. What else could she ask for? Those romantic passionate nights with wine swept Nancy off her feet. At one point, Chameleon told Nancy that he wanted to marry her as soon as he solved his financial problems. He said that due to his recent problematic divorce, he had lost so much money that he could not even pay the rents of his offices. Nancy naively offered to help since her dream lover also wanted to marry her. It was her dream to marry a decent guy such as Chameleon. He refused to accept money from her in the beginning, he even insisted for a few days that he could not accept. His insistence and so-called honesty and pride yielded its result.

Nancy sold her apartment and additionally got a bank loan of $15,000. She was doing all this with the hope of marrying her dream man as soon as possible because after all, they were blindly in love, or at least that was what Nancy had in her naive and pure mind. Nancy's mother and her sister warned her many times that she didn't know this guy so well, and she shouldn't give all she had, but she never listened to them because she was really blinded by love. She even had a quarrel with her sister and blamed her for being jealous of her happiness.

A few days later, Chameleon told Nancy that he had lost his aunt, and needed to go to a different city to attend the funeral. That was the last day Nancy saw her dream man until he was caught by the police two months later. She was left both financially and psychologically damaged.

The funny part of this story is Chameleon's words at the police station, I actually fell in love with her, but I had to leave.

Unfortunately, we have an assumption that we can understand a good and bad person from their appearance. Therefore, it causes a shocking revelation, as in our Chameleon example, when a person looks benevolent on the outside, but turns out to have a malicious personality. Lastly, please always keep in mind that regardless of age, sex, education, or culture, no one is immune to being scammed by such hidden monsters with the face of an angel and the mind of a demon, simply just because there is no patch for human stupidity. We always need to be on our guard, both for ourselves and for our friends and family.
